This hose to faucet hookup has changed our lives. OMG. Brilliant. Why didn't we do this sooner? We just screw this hose onto the bathtub faucet, snake it out to the deck, adjust the water temperature according to personal preference, fill up the pool and BAM! Party. Some of you may recall having to fill up bucket after bucket at the tub and walk it out to the deck. It took about ten buckets to fill a dinky little baby pool. No more of that ridiculousness my friends.

Tommy started three days a week at Chalk Preschool a few weeks ago. Here are some shots of him with his backpack. Preschool has been a good thing for Tommy (and his family). I'm told that he listens. He follows instructions. He sits in circle time for the duration. Really? Really really. What a big boy!

Egg Allergy

We had a bit of a scare last week. Will broke out into hives after eating scrambled eggs. I wasn't alarmed until I heard him wheezing. I called his pediatrician and she said to hang up and call 911. So we had our first and last (knock on wood) ambulance ride. Will didn't cry or seem uncomfortable. His medications were all oral and he loved the attention from all the hot young nurses in the observation unit at the hospital. So now we carry an EpiPen wherever we go and must avoid eggs (obviously) and all egg products until we see the allergist in a few weeks.

Strangely, Alex had no reaction to the eggs.

Pat and I were in Atlanta for a wedding last weekend. We spent two nights here and it was glorious. Nana, Aunt Emily, and Katie flew in from Cleveland, so each man had his own private nanny. Bliss. Oh thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

The weekend before was Easter and I decided to introduce a kid friendly version of the crucifixion and resurrection. Yeah. I know. A kid friendly version of an ancient Roman execution method. Tricky. I gingerly explained that Jesus got "a boo-boo of the hands and feet" just like Gordon had a "boo-boo of the boiler ache" and when you fall you get a "boo-boo of the knee". When Nana took him to church over the weekend, he kept saying, "Poor Jesus!", loudly and with a dramatically pained look on his face. The Catholic mass can use a little spice could it not? Ah. I guess ya had to be there.

We made a last minute decision to head to Cleveland and spend Easter with family. It was fantastic. It was so much easier taking care of these boys in a huge house with a finished basement, huge yard, quiet neighborhood, and attached garage. Of course I had five extra sets of helping hands on top of all that, but still.

I'm going to rant because, well, I feel that I deserve it. The city is a pain in my caboose. It's so much fun, I've made a ton of great friends and there is always something to do, but schlepping these boys up and down seven flights of stairs to get in and out of the house is really starting to kill my back (and my spirit). Sitting in the house all day is not an option for me, so I choose the stairs. Then there is the business of loading and unloading them in the car. You'd have to see that circus because words don't do it justice. We live on the third floor, so we try to be cautious about the noise and that just stinks. It's not easy to keep these boys "quiet". Even if we lived in a house in the city, we wouldn't have an attached garage or a yard for these guys to run around in.

We have about two more years in this place, so I'm hoping to be in the best shape of my life when all is said and done. Think positive! Plus, we'll be able to walk more once the weather gets nice (which seems like it will never happen), thereby eliminating the car loading problem. Think positive! Plus, Tommy will start FREE preschool in the fall five mornings a week and I can see his school from my front window. Think positive!

This is what we wake up to every morning (well, each guy is usually in his respective crib). The unbelievable cuteness never wares off.

Here are the twins interacting. They love each other despite the hair pulling and toy hoarding. These guys are climbers (unfortunately). They climb everything they can, including the stairs. They are cruising along furniture and sometimes even stand on their own for a second or two.

Here is Tommy G and his buddy Jackson playing trains. These kids are finally starting to interact, therefore providing their own entertainment. It's friggin awesome. This isn't the greatest video, but it's still cute. Their favorite game is "chase". Jackson chases Tommy with a tiny baby stroller up and down our hallway while Josie and I drink coffee and talk about adult stuff. The other day, Jackson informed Tommy that he farted. Tommy responded, "Josie farted". Poor Josie.

Identical twins still fascinate me and I feel so lucky and honored to have a set of my very own. Too bad I've been so bad about documenting their milestones. It's so unfair, but typical for the second born(s). These guys are both developing at almost exactly the same rate. They pop the same teeth within days of one another. Both eat and sleep about the same amount. People always ask if one has emerged as the "dominant" one and I've said no up until this week. I think Will is more demanding for the time being. I'm reluctant to give them labels because as soon as I call one the better eater or the better sleeper, they switch.

Both started sitting up a few weeks shy of six months old (Alex was first). Both started crawling around seven months (Will was first by a week and some change). Will started pulling up yesterday and Alex pulled up today. Both guys are good eaters (much more robust than their older brother) and fantastic sleepers (although they are early risers). They are happy, healthy, and absolutely adorable.

Raising these three little guys is tough and, since Tommy gave up his naps, I don't have a break during the day. It's go-time all day, every day, but we're figuring it out...until the walking stage. It's okay. I'm the right girl for the job. I love, love, LOVE these boys.

P.S. Will is in the light blue and Alex is in the navy blue. I do dress them in the same clothes whenever I get the chance. I can't resist! How cute are twin boys dressed in the same clothes? Yeah. Cute. Plus, now is the only time I can get away with it.

I finally figured out how to upload pictures from my phone, but not videos (of which I have several cute Christmas takes). Of course I wish I would have taken more pictures, but I managed to get a few good ones amongst the hustle and bustle of traveling and taking care of these three stinky, adorable boys.

Next year we'll be able to start threatening Tommy with "Santa's watching!". He didn't quite make that connection this year (or he was just calling our bluff). He loved opening gifts and was spoiled rotten by his loved ones. Seriously, he was rotten. Thank goodness he's so stinking cute.

If not, I can't blame anyone. Oh my goodness I've been a haaaaaaarible blogress (okay so I've never been a blogress, but you know what I mean). So many pathetic excuses, I know. My latest is that I haven't figured out how to upload the pictures and videos I've taken on my new phone.

Oh, and if I forgot your birthday, didn't acknowledge the birth of your child, forgot that you were moving out of the country, never sent you a Christmas card, never returned your call, didn't respond to your text, didn't "like" an important Facebook status update, or did anything else that made you think I don't give a crap about you, I'm real, REAL sorry about that. Tommy loooooves playing in the snow, except he refuses to wear his mittens. So ... he'll throw a fit if you try to put them on his hands, and then he'll throw a fit once his little hands get too cold because he has no mittens on. As fun as it is, this can last for only about ten minutes before we have to retreat inside. We'll keep working on it.

On Twinning

People always ask me if twins run in my family (even though they really want to ask if these guys were the result of fertility drugs, but it's cool). The answer is yes it does run in my family, but twinning doesn't work the way most people think it does.

Identical twins like Will and Alex and Uncle Chris and Uncle Juez have nothing to do with heredity. This type of twinning is the result of one egg that spontaneously splits into to two eggs. Fraternal twinning is hereditary. This is when more than one egg is released from an ovary, or "hyper ovulation". The hyper ovulation gene is what is passed on to offspring.

Also, twinning in the father's side of the family has no bearing on weather a pregnancy results in multiple babies. He can however pass on a twinning gene to his female offspring.

Why do we care? Well I care because there is a chance that I could have fraternal twins if we decided to get pregnant again. There are several sets of fraternal twins on my father's side of the family. Also, the ability to carry twins successfully (not an easy job) is also hereditary. So there's another factor. The chicks in my family and in Pat's family (GoGo) have, as my friend Josie would say, "good ovens". If we ever have a daughter, she's gonna be screwed...err, um, blessed.

The Bear Egged My House

At 5pm on Wednesday evening, while his mother was feeding her son Will in a peaceful, dimly lit nursery, Thomas Alexander Golon went into the refridgerator and removed a carton of eggs. He proceeded to slam one egg on the kitchen floor. Next, he took a second egg to the nursery, looked at his mother, smiled ear to ear, said "egg", crushed the egg in his hand, and smeared it into the carpet. After his mother screamed at him to leave the nursery, Thomas, still smiling, ran back into the kitchen and removed a third egg from the carton. He galloped to the living room and stood in the middle of the carpet. His mother had come out of the nursery by this time and, after a brief struggle, successfully took possession of the third, unbroken egg. She then rushed to wash the possible salmonella from Thomas's hands and put him in his room. Thomas's mother immediately called Thomas's father and demanded that he leave work immediately and come home because she wasn't sure what she was going to do next.

These guys popped their first teeth pretty early. Alex got his first one at four months and Will just got two at the same time. They didn't really seem to mind either. These boys are just happy. They LOVE their big brother??? Yeah. Especially when he violently bounces them in the bouncy seat or "scares" them (he immediately follows this behavior with patting their heads and saying "nice baby"). I suppose any attention is appreciated.

At their four month check up, Dr. W pointed out that their heads are a bit asymmetrical. In order to avoid helmets, we're trying to keep them upright as much as possible during their waking hours. We've broken out the Bumbos and Exersaucers. They appreciate the variation!

Pumkin Patch

Well, it was actually the Oz Park Halloween Party/Pumpkin Patch. It's one of the only ones in the city, so it was packed and the lines were ridiculous. It was at least a 30 minute wait for anything cool like the hay ride or petting zoo. Tommy G would not keep the hood to his costume on. It was a bust, but we still got a few cute pictures. Plus, it was way too beautiful a day to hang out indoors.

September Updates

Things are getting easier! We're figuring it out.

The twins are falling into a loose schedule and cry WAY less then they did a month ago. Now they cry for specific reasons. Transferring them to their own room changed our lives. They sleep much better and Pat and I have evenings back to ourselves. Will smiles whenever you look at him but Alex makes you work for it. They're good guys.

Tommy is so two. This stage is hilarious, adorable, exhausting, and frustrating. I'm sure he's like most two year olds in that he throws at least ten tantrums a day. He feels compelled to climb everything and is fascinated with snaps, buckles, vehicles and poop. (Whenever we change him, he asks to see the poop and then to flush it down the toilet.) The kid also loves to sing and it is the cutest thing I've ever heard in my life. His favorites include The ABC's, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, The Wonderpets song, Where is Thumbkin, Rockabye Baby, and The Hot Dog Dance. So yeah. Climbing, trucks, poop and singing.

Tommy holding Will and being "nice". When you ask if he wants to hold the baby, he gets excited and sits in a chair with his arms out. He'll hold the baby for about five seconds and then just stand up to go play with a toy or move on. I guess he assumes that someone nearby will just catch the infant.

GoGo gave us another week of her time. What a treat! Here she is with her three grandsons enjoying a morning TV program.

The Second Coming of Nana

Sorry I haven't posted in awhile. You know- busy busy busy. Here are some pics from the second coming of Nana. This time she brought Aunt Emily and Uncle Evan along. The adults outnumbered the babies. Bliss.

Aaaaand. AAAAAAND. Nana and Aunt Emily took over night feedings for three days IN A ROW. This means that Pat and I logged at least 8 hours of sleep for three nights IN A ROW. We were totally refreshed. Poor Nana though. The sleep deprivation really took it's toll on her towards the end.

Aunt Emily is the most grown up 15 year old you will ever meet.

Tommy really took a shine to Uncle Evan, who was more than patient when the little man was thisclose to resetting his video game about 100 times a day. Eventually, Tommy thought that the Xbox was called "No touch Tommy!"
Of course our household is still very much Tommy centered. Having extra bodies allowed us to take him out of the house and enjoy the summer. Here he is at the local water park. Doesn't this place look awesome? The Bear chose to play with a toy truck in the muddy puddles on the periphery of the park, but that's cool. (Uncle Chris, please note that Tommy is outgrowing his mandals.)

Either things get easier along the way or you just accept the insanity of your new life. Or maybe it's both. These kids are doing great. Pat and I are a well oiled machine when it comes to caring for all these little people. The man who used to refuse to eat while holding a baby (lest it take away from his meal experience) was spotted yesterday holding a paci in a baby's mouth while shaving. We're learning. We're getting creative. We're having fun? Okay, that's a lie. But we are learning.

Bottle props are a must. I had to prepare Tommy's dinner of hot dogs and processed cheese. You see, our fridge is empty...

This video was taken on my first official day without the help of Pat, Nana, Grammy GoGo, Papa, or the sitter. It was interesting. The bottles were sterilized twice after this incident. It started as helping mommy with dishes and playing in the sink, but I turned my back for 30 seconds and this is the result.

He will not nap. He will not stay in his crib. He has defeated the safety lock on the door knob, so we were forced to put a lock on the the outside of his door. We can't be having 3am Kool-Aid parties like Uncle Tom and Uncle Chris! We put everything in his closet and duct taped the doors shut (until I get some proper locks) so there is nothing fun to do in his room. He fell asleep on the floor the other night.

We tried the whole put him back in his crib without showing emotion ordeal. Pat was in charge and did it over 100 times the first night, 20 something times the second night, and gave up around the 50th time on the third night. Supposedly the behavior will be extinct in just a few nights with this technique. Guess what Dr. Weisbleuth? DIDN'T WORK. Plus, we're way too tired from newborn twins to continue that crap. This has become a full-blown power struggle.

We've tried yelling and a even little bit of intimidation. It's embarrassing, because I've totally stooped to his level. Anyway, Tommy just laughs his head off. Negative attention is still attention. I've received several suggestions and frankly they piss me off because most of them have to do with trying to reason with him and he isn't even two years old! "Show him the lock and tell him that if he stays in his crib, you won't lock his door anymore." People! This kid couldn't care less about future evenings. "Get him a toddler bed with nifty pillows and talk about the big boy bed and how awesome it is that he's a big brother." Get real.

Sigh. This is a video of the disaster he made in his room yesterday. His dresser now sits in the hallway. Notice that he feels compelled to warn me about the hot light bulb on the ceiling. "Light hot!"

Losing ridiculous amounts of weight while eating my words

Okay this is really tough. Remember when I said it wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be? I'm eating my words. Nana left yesterday and there was a few hours between dropping her off at the airport and waiting for Grammy GoGo to arrive when I was alone with my three children. Holy crapoli that was scary. Mostly because I couldn't make everyone happy at the same time. I know it will take some getting used to, but it feels unnatural to be spread so thin and not to pick up a crying baby right away. Plus, the twins are waking up to the world and really come alive at night. Pat and I are exhausted. Oh, and Tommy refuses to stay in his crib.

I was never so happy to see GoGo yesterday. She's been though this whole twin thing and is perfectly comfortable tending to both babies while I take care of Tommy. It's a good system but eventually I'm going to need to do this by myself. I'm confident we'll figure it out, but it's quite daunting.

So I've lost 40 pounds in two weeks. I'm not kidding. THAT is how much baby and fluid there is in a twin pregnancy. My bony witch feet are back! This also means that I've only got about ten pounds of pure fat (mostly on my buns) to lose. That's not so bad. It feels fantastic to not be pregnant anymore. I can sit down on the ground and play with Tommy. I can catch him, lift him, and go up and down stairs without passing out. Mamma is back!

The twins are 6 days old and are thriving. Both are a few oz's away from gaining back their birth weights and were described as "perfect" at the four day check up. Everyone was so healthy that they kicked us out of the hospital after the standard two day stay. No stay in the NICU and no c-section. Both outcomes are pretty rare for twins.

The junior bears are the eating, sleeping, pooping fools they should be. I hope I don't eat my words, but it's not as hard as I thought it was going to be. Adding a second baby to your family turns life upside down, but it's almost like it doesn't really matter after that. I mean, you're up all night anyway right? (This does not apply to toddlerhood. That's going to be impossible.) Of course, Nana is here and does everything and more including, but not limited to, caring for Tommy, preparing all meals, cleaning, doing laundry and holding crying babies. Pat and I make a great team, but since Pat doesn't have any boobs and went back to work on Monday, much of the feeding responsibility falls on my shoulders.

About that. Breast feeding is much easier the second time around and, if I had only one baby, I'd probably stick with it. But since I haven't figured out how to feed both twins at the same time, breast feeding is basically all I do. It's a time issue. Formula feeding would be ridiculously easier and the current routine is totally unsustainable once super Nana leaves. Plus, I promised myself that I wouldn't get wrapped up in the formula feeding guilt and breast feeding pressure that robbed me of a good deal of enjoyment in the early days of Tommy's infancy. I'm taking it one day at a time, but I see formula in our future. Lots and lots of formula.

The senior bear (Tommy) is waaaaaay cuter than I remember. I think his Nana has taught him a thing or two while we were in the hospital, so it seems like he has made major leaps and bounds with talking. But oh the tantrums. Yesterday, he hurled himself out of his booster seat and fell on his face. Unable to eat any of his favorite foods because of his busted lip and major mommy guilt on my end, we fed him ice cream for lunch.

We are thrilled to have the boys with us. William Christopher Golon was born on June 10 at 10:39 pm and was followed two minutes later by his brother, Alexander Chase Golon. Will is 6 lbs, 3 oz and 19 in. and Alex is 5 lbs, 13 oz, and 18.5 inches. Both boys have been doing great at every step of the way. Will is on the left and Alex on the right.

Belly shot to come this evening. I've got to get the right angle. I'm huge and I have one stretch mark over my belly button piercing. It's about two inches long. I would have been home free had it not been for that stupid piercing.

It turns out that the false labor over the past week has actually produced some results. I'm almost 100% effaced and 3 cm dilated. So the doctor agreed that Thursday would be perfect timing for an induction. There is a slight chance that boys may need to go to the NICU, but it's unlikely since they'll be full term and hopefully weigh enough to maintain a healthy body temperature on their own. Also, there is always the increased risk of a c-section with an induction, but it's unlikely since my cervix is so favorable. I'm not against c-sections, but am hoping not to have to have one for the sake of recovery time. But, as a few of us know, other things can happen when giving birth the old fashioned way that can make recovery just as long and painful.

We are so SO SO excited to meet the boys. I can't wait for my body to go back to normal again. I've been spending a lot of time in the tub and yesterday was the first day that I couldn't get out. I'm just big and uncomfortable and ready ready ready.

I cannot BELIEVE the boys haven't come yet. My doctors say that 50% of twins are born before 37 weeks and the other half come along sometime after that. I'm guessing we're gonna need to smoke our other two children out of the womb at 38 weeks but Pat thinks I'll just go into labor naturally. Maybe I'll do another poll. I have an appointment on Monday (36 weeks and 6 days) to check my progress and to set an induction date.

Seriously Great Friends

A few of my closest mommy friends decided to throw us a little baby shower last Friday. What!!!?? I would have been so moved had I been there. Last Thursday night, I started to cramp so badly that I thought it was go time. By Friday morning, I was doing last minute preparations and taking warm baths to deal with the pain. Sooooo, I cancelled the "play date" I had that afternoon. The ladies had decorations, gifts, cupcakes, the works all ready for the big surprise. I had no idea. Oh no! We ended up having a few families over on Sunday for a backyard pool party and got to open all of the lovely gifts. Sigh.

So here's a shout out to the ladies. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You gals make me a better mom.

I left the room for about 30 seconds and came back to find Tommy in the baby swing. He's obviously doing last minute safety testing for his brothers. Good call. I didn't even think of that. What's the weight limit on these things anyway?

Tuesday was the official 35 week mark. Yipee! As uncomfortable as I am, the developmental differences between a 35 weeker and a 37 weeker (officially full term) are significant. I know the boys will be fine if they decided to come tomorrow, but I'm hoping they stay in for a few more weeks. I've been feeling crampy and last time that meant that labor was right around the corner. We aren't freaking out or anything, just keeping our fingers crossed.

On a totally different note, my husband told me I looked like a beautiful bumble bee yesterday (I was wearing black shorts and a yellow top). Thanks?

34 Weeks

According to the ultrasound yesterday, the boys are weighing in at 5 lbs, 2 oz and 5 lbs, 3oz. That's a lotta baby! We can realx now that I'm officially 34 weeks. Babies born at 34 weeks tend to do just fine, even if they do need a little stay in the NICU. The sucking, swallowing, breathing coordination required for eating is established around this time too. Seeing another one of my kids with a feeding tube up his nose would be tough to swallow (check out THAT pun). We're hoping that these guys stay in until about 36 or 37 weeks. I'll be induced at 38 weeks, but I can't imagine carrying them that long. Of course I'm uncomfortable, but I couldn't have asked for a better pregnancy. So far there have been no real medical issues with me or the boys, so we're extremely grateful.

Pat has been so freaking patient with me. The man does everything in the way of heavy lifting and Bear care when he's home. And he does it with a smile on his face. He's been fielding my complaints for the last eight months and never gets irritated. He just says that he's sorry and asks if there is anything he can do to make life easier for me. Yep. I picked a good one.

Tommy still eats EVERYTHING. I'm not saying he has a mental disorder, but he hasn't grown out of the baby phase where he puts everything in his mouth. He'll pick up a rock on the playground, look at me, say "wock", pop it in his mouth and run as fast as he can in the other direction. I'd love to color and play sidewalk chalk with him, but it's exhausting and scary because he automatically eats the crayons and chalk. Once he walked around for two weeks with a red wax filling in his molar. The threat of choking and lead poisoning looms. You'd think that not eating things that tasted so nasty (dirt, chalk, soap, etc.) would sell itself. Apparently his cousin Jack still samples everything, so I'm guessing we've got at least another five months of this.

This kid is lucky he's so stinking cute! Also, his talking has really exploded and now he can't go one minute without saying something. It's so much fun! Who cares if we only understand what he's saying half the time!

I have a theory

about why this pregnancy is suddenly very painful. My skin isn't stretching enough. It may sound stupid, but hear me out. So since my skin isn't "giving" (no stretch marks on the belly, people telling me I look small for twins, etc.), the babies and their fluids are smashing my internal organs and putting LOTS of pressure in the darndest places.

I'd trade this pain for the first trimester barfyness any day. It actually hurts to do anything but lay on my side. It even hurts to sit down. If I lay on my back, I suffocate. No exaggeration. If I unknowingly shift to my back in my sleep, I wake up gasping for air. Ultrasounds need to be performed while I'm laying on my side. I wake Pat up in the middle of the night for upper back massages (You'd think it would be my lower back right?).

I can barely perform the basic duties of my job. Thankfully, I've got help three mornings a week.

I've always wanted at least three kids, but if this were a "singleton" (as they say in the biz) and it felt like this, I'd settle for two. I am done being pregnant after this. This post will serve as documentation just in case I have selective memory two years from now.

30 Weeks: Too Fat to Parent

I'm too fat to parent Tommy properly. I do just enough to keep him alive. Anything else is gravy at this point. We've hired a sitter to come three mornings a week and give him a proper run. Tommy loves her. He may even love her more than he loves me. I don't blame him.

Hello Third Trimester

I'm 28 weeks along, but measuring between 33 and 34 weeks. No stretch marks YET, but I'm not holding my breath. The ultrasound on Tuesday indicated that the boys are 2 lbs/6 oz. and 2 lbs/8oz. I've gained about 32 pounds so far and only five of that is baby. So yeah. I'm pretty big and uncomfortable, but things are going really, really well.

I've switched doctors and WOW. It was like going from Motel 6 to The Four Seasons. I'll be getting ultrasounds every 2-4 weeks to make sure that the boys are growing at the same pace. New doc says he's almost positive that the boys are identical because of the very thin membrane separating the amniotic sacs, but he can't say for sure since the number of placentas wasn't noted in the diagnostic ultrasound that old doc did. What a jerk. It's important to note identical twins since they share a placenta and can present with Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome. The boys are growing well and at the same pace, so we're all very happy.

I'm so much bigger than I look in this picture. It's easy to see when I'm sporting a bare belly, but I feel self conscious about posting one this time around.

I realize that I vowed not to complain about pregnancy anymore, but I just can't stop. This is really uncomfortable and I can't wait to have these babies. I contract almost every time I'm active, but it's normal and the doctor said that if it's irregular and I can make it go away by resting, then I shouldn't be alarmed. It's just annoying. Plus I'm gigantic, slow, can't get comfortable at night and have really bad skin. That is all.

Tommy crawled out of his crib 10-15 times before going to bed tonight. We supernannied him by calmly placing him back in the crib without giving him so much as snuggle, a smile, a wink, or a glance. He. Was. Pissed. (It was heartbreaking because all we wanted to do was hug him.) I fully expect this same performance tomorrow and I'm prepared. Nanny Jo says that consistently putting the tot back in bed will eventually solve the problem and I totally believe her. I just hope he's a quick study.

Here's a belly shot at 26 weeks. At my 24 week appointment, my belly measured at 31 weeks. I wonder what I'm measuring now. Up until this week, my size hasn't hindered me, but I was struggling yesterday at the park with Tommy. Geeze oh man I'm big and slow. I'll be lucky if I get outta this thing weighing less than my husband. I was lucky enough to have escaped stretch marks during my pregnancy with Tommy. So far I'm in the clear, but these dudes have a lot of growing to do. We'll see.

Day at the Mall

Last Saturday was rainy and gross, so we headed out to the mall in Schaumburg. It has a sweet play area for little ones and Tommy needed new shoes.

Tommy's new thing is greeting anyone and everyone he sees. If someone doesn't respond, he'll walk up, get in their face and say, "Hi". The mom in this pic was obviously engrossed in her iPhone. (Probably one of the few free moments she would get before 8pm and she was taking advantage. Hey, I get it.) Tommy wouldn't leave her alone.

But she stood her ground, gave him a quick hello and a friendly smile, and went straight back to her phone. I can't say I blame her. Nobody's kid is as cute as your own. Tommy eventually gave up.

What's wrong? Everything and nothing.

The tantrums. Man oh man. This kid will scream and hurl himself himself on the floor with a contorted face and crocodile tears. It's pretty hilarious (and even cute) if we're not in public. Just about everything (or nothing) sets him off. He can turn it off as quickly as he turns it on. Just give him what he wants dammit. And good luck trying to figure it out because sometimes it's not so obvious.

What fascinates me is that he seriously thinks that if he can't play with that kid's trike, the world will come crashing down around us. I guess it makes sense since he doesn't have the ability to forecast. He truly lives in the present. So when I take away that butter knife he's trying to run down the hall with, he feels like fun as he has come to know it, is gone forever. The party is over. Forever. You think he's gonna take that lying down? Hell no!

Then there's the the times when I have absolutely no idea why he's so pissed. Most of the time I can figure it out by process of elimination since he's not the world's most advanced talker. It seems like the tantrum thing happened over night, so I'm shaky on on diffusion techniques.

In other news, the twins are extremely active (probably not abnormally active, but two babies means constant movement) and everyone is healthy and happy. The weather is becoming bearable, so we've resumed outdoor activities. My skin is slowly going from light grey back to peach. Oh and I've gained 27 lbs the last time we checked. Rapid weight gain feels so strange and icky, but I'm not complaining. We're just glad everyone is going to be okay.

The Longest 68 Hours

My OB's office called around 5pm on Monday asking that we schedule a fetal echocardiogram based on something that was seen in the results from the 20 week ultrasound. Specifically, they wanted to rule out a rare and serious congenital heart defect called "Double Outlet Right Ventricle" (DORV) in Twin A. We weren't able to get in for the test until this past Thursday. One cannot begin to imagine the agony of that wait. I've never been so afraid in my life. The test showed that the hearts on both boys are totally normal. And those were the official results given by the pediatric cardiologist who performed the test herself. All is well.

It's difficult to get good pictures from an ultrasound, especially with multiples, so repeat scans are common. This fact and the language used in the report ("rule out") were what I clung to in order to function as Tommy's mother until we knew for sure. When you're so frightened like that, everything is immediately put into perspective. ("Oh how could I be such an ingrate! No more complaining about how miserable pregnancy is!")

Why my doctor didn't receive and review the report until three weeks after the ultrasound is a whole other issue that is being addressed. Because the scan was performed at a different office, my report basically fell through the cracks. When I met with my doctor a few days after the ultrasound and he assured me that he would get the report and call me if he had any concerns. Naturally, I trusted that no news was good news. That was a mistake. Lesson learned. We're in the process of taking our business elsewhere.

I'm emotionally drained, so this is all I have to say on the matter right now.

Tommy at 18 Months

Weight: 22 lbs-8oz (10th percentile)
Height: 34 inches (90th percentile)

Sleeping: Up until three weeks ago, he was sleeping 12 hours a night and taking a three hour nap in the afternoon. Tommy "No Naps" suddenly decided to start refusing half of his naps. I always put him in his crib and keep him there for an hour of "quiet time". If he doesn't nap, he's a mess by 4pm and we put him to bed for the evening at 5:30pm. Maybe it's the molars. Who knows. I'm hoping it's temporary, but I'm not gonna stress about it. There's nothing we can do but provide him with the opportunity to sleep. I'm just grateful that he eats!

Eating: WHAT a difference from last winter. He eats plenty. Of course he'll go on strike when he's sick, but we all do. There's no question about the fact that Tommy G is a string bean, but someone's gotta be in the 10th percentile right? He likes to stay lean and agile just in case. He's able to use a fork on his own. He can use a spoon as well, but it's so messy that I dread turning over the reigns. He could do with some more practice. His favorite foods include: Stouffers Mac N Cheese, peas, scrambled eggs, yogurt, teddy grahams, tomatoes, beans, and cheese. He's not a fan of a fruit.

Talking: He's not stringing words together and is pretty lazy with pronunciation, but he does use language with meaning. And man is it cute! He's got about 25 words in his vocabulary. (I always used to roll my eyes at people that kept track, but I had to count how many words he had in order to make a decision about speech therapy. He was evaluated at 15 months because he wasn't talking yet and the therapists said to wait until 18 months to see if it's necessary.) Sometimes he'll say a word for a day and we'll never hear it again. He loves to say "baby". He refers to his reflection in the mirror, baby dolls, infants, and older children all as "baby". He can do a few signs as well, but doesn't use them the way he would use a word to identify something.

Favorite Things: Trains, trucks, cars, vacuum cleaners, Thomas the Train programs, Baby Einstein Sign Language video, reading books on his own while sitting in his rocking chair, jumping on beds, and climbing. He's backed off a tad on the running and I've noticed that he's able to sit still for longer periods of time to concentrate on things.

Dislikes: DIAPER CHANGES (my goodness when will that nonsense stop?), sharing, riding in the car, not being allowed to climb on top of tables, and cuddling. He throws mini tantrums that seem to last longer and longer these days. I'm guessing the public meltdown is right around the corner. The word "no" is hilarious to him (the meaner, the louder, the angrier, the better), so I need to find alternative forms of setting boundaries, but that's a whole other blog post.

He's exploding into a real life boy. He's curious, energetic, demanding, and generally pleased with life. I can't imagine how it's possible for him to get any cuter. It just wouldn't be fair!

Love Affair with Choo Choos

Last weekend we set up Tommy's train table with the actual tracks and trains because we felt he was ready for that sort of "advanced" play. Oh he was ready. This kid walks around with trains in his hands at all times. He kisses the trains. He fights with the trains. Instead of a simple "choo choo", he uses "chugga chugga chugga chugga" when referencing them. The train table with all of the tracks, trains, and fun extras adds up to about $500. What!!!??? Oh Boy! Oh Boy!

We are having two HEALTHY boys! Ultrasound pictures showed only one placenta, so it's likely that they are identical, but we wouldn't know for sure without a DNA test. Oh the fun/insanity of three boys under the age of three:) Pat and I are thrilled, but Tommy remains unaffected by the news.

I haven't posted much about this pregnancy because part of me was pretty worried (for no good reason, of course) about the risks of carrying twins. Now that I know all is well, I'm committed to documenting the freak show that is my belly. It's no secret that I despise being pregnant. I'm grateful to be pregnant, but that doesn't mean I enjoy it. At least I'm at the stage where I'm not sick anymore and not big enough to be extremely uncomfortable. From what I hear, this part of a twin pregnancy will last only for the next four weeks. So now is the time to par-tay!

Four more days 'til we find out the sexes of these babies. Our hunches change all the time and we have no preference. I don't think I've ever guessed a baby's sex correctly. I was so sure that Tommy was going to be a girl. Last weekend, I had a vivid dream that I was carrying two boys. Uncle Juez, who claims a perfect guessing record for Golon babies, thinks it's two boys. What do you think?
